Getting the right pair of goggles

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a universally good pair of goggles - the fit is mostly dependent on the shape of the face.

Ill-fitting goggles are more likely to let water in which can be problematic for some children when seeking to build their confidence and can distract them from being able to focus on the lesson.

So before you splash any cash, it is worth checking whether they are the right pair of goggles for your child(ren).

Fitting the goggles yourself:

  • Remove the goggles from the packaging (yes I even do this in the shops! Either that or be prepared to buy them, try them on and return them if they are no good).

  • Position the lenses on the face and gently press in to enable the seal around the lenses to suck in.

  • Check the comfort by ensuring that eyes are open and the face isn’t being screwed up or pulled in any direction.

  • A good fitting pair of goggles will stay in place when you remove your hands. Very rarely both lenses will stay in place for a longer period of time, but at least one of the lenses should hold and the other one should hold even very briefly and not just fall away from the face immediately.

N.B. The strap is not there to keep the water out of the goggles but to allow for the face to change direction, whether from side to side or going down and up. If goggle marks are causing pain by the end of the lesson - the strap is too tight (on some people slight goggle marks seem to be unavoidable but this applies to less people than you think).

If you are unsure then please do feel free to ask us. We usually have a selection of goggles around that we can try out so that you know that you are buying the right pair.
